defense secretary who wore the uniform. at the same time who will be comfortable standing up to the generals as he works to shrink the defense department and complete the u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan. the brennan nomination, he has been the chief architect and public defender in the expanded use of drones. with 55 senators in the democratic caucus, the drone policy may get some attention during his confirmation hearing. back in 2008, the president wanted him for the cia spot at the time, but brennan ended up withdrawing his name under pressure from the left after questions about his connection to the enhanced interrogation techniques during the bush administration. white house argues that one of the reasons brennan was chosen this time around is because he has led a process to ban torture. those enhanced interrogation techniques over the past four years and they argue he has worked successfully to take out al qaeda's top leadership, including osama bin laden. very close to the president personally and has been by his side for some of the toughest firmte firstterm decisions. this

nomination for defense secretary and cia director respectively. neither choice is a shock and neither is likely to have an easy go at the senate confirmation process because you know that's coming up. joining me now with the sin sights on this and the expert e expertise, gloria borger and chief national correspondent john king. in the interest of the new year's resolution to be positive, let's start with the pros, gloria borger. let's go over the list with chuck hagel as the starting point. he's a war hero. and he has two purple hearts from vietnam serving alongside of his brother. each of them saving each other's life which is a story unto itself. and he went on to represent a native nebraska in the u.s. senate and now he co-chairs the president's intelligence advisory board. that sounds like a pretty good cv, they say. what's not to like? >> well, if you're in the white house, you say that's the reason his confirmation should be smooth sailing. but, you know, he was a two-term senator and when you're a two-term senator you have a record and you have a history. and chuck hagel's history

injuries not little scratches and cuts. it looks like defensive wounds and i don't know how anybody could overlook that. as far as the idea that drawing dealers came to collect money from her. if you you remember on your show in the 1990s when i made the sensational claim that we had proof that whitney houston was being threatened by her drug dealer with death because she wasn't paying for her drugs that was before anybody knew that whitney was taking drugs. all this was borne out because whitney admitted she had been taking drugs since 1992. when she died her yearly intake of drugs was $230,000 and there were numerous cases not just that we claimed of h her being approached by drug dealers and threatened with physical harm and death and in one case bobby brown was kidnapped. there was a whole book written about this incident. he was kidnapped by a gang called the preacher gang and they tied him up naked, beat him, tortured him, pointed guns at his head and then had him call whitney and say you better bring $400,000 or we are going to kill your boyfriend. >> rod wheeler, former well

barack obama has drawn on some veteran names to take care of defense and security. he nominated chuck hagel and his counter terrorism advisor as the director of the central intelligence agency. obama brought both men by his side in making the announcement. >> as president and commander in chief my most solemn obligation is the security of the american people to help meet the challenges of our time i'm proud to announce my choice for two key members of my national security team. >> obama nominated hagel to replace leon panetta. both men will have to go through senate confirmation hearings. hagel could be in for tough questions. lawmakers are looking into statements he made about iran. leaders in congress need to agree on comprehensive measures to reduce the u.s. debt by the end of february. if they don't the pentagon's budget will be cut by $45 billion. that's 9 prz. secretary of defense robert hail said what's even worse is the automatic cuts would continue over a decade. >> we are working toward rebalancing toward asia pacific presence there. we will pay attention to long-term press
